The police have launched a manhunt for the suspected killers of a legal practitioner who returned from court after obtaining bail for a prisoner in a murder case in Egbebelu village, Ekwulobia, Orumba North Local Government Area, Anambra State.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra Police Command, confirmed this in a statement issued Thursday in Awka.
Ikenga claimed the shooters also killed two other people who were with the lawyer, but one of them survived.
He stated that the event occurred as the three victims were returning from High Court II Ekwulobia in the state’s Orumba North Local Government.
He added that the legal practitioner had bailed a defendant in a pending murder case at the Court, unaware that they were being tracked as they left.
According to the statement, Anambra’s Commissioner of Police (CP), Ikioye Orutugu, accompanied a team of top officers, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Charge of Operations and others, to the crime site in Egbebelu village.
According to reports, the CP ordered an extensive investigation into the incident and assigned tactical and intelligence teams to apprehend the offenders and guarantee justice was delivered.
“The police spokesperson stated that preliminary investigations indicated that the victims were attacked while returning from the court session, after being tracked and double crossed by the assailants.
“In the course of the preliminary investigations, a red Toyota Camry vehicle, believed to belong to one of the deceased, was recovered from the scene,” Ikenga told the newspaper.
He stated that one of the victims who survived the attack is presently being treated at an unnamed hospital.
“The survivor has been debriefed by the police and has provided crucial information that is aiding ongoing investigations and manhunt operations,” he told reporters. (NAN)
