Akpabio: The new minimum salary of N70,000 is applicable to domestic workers.

The newly agreed minimum wage, which includes maids and other domestic workers, is applicable to all workers in the public and private sectors, according to Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

This was said by Akpabio on Tuesday at the plenary session.

Soon after President Bola Tinubu sent the bill, both houses of the National Assembly swiftly passed it.

“If you are a tailor and you employ additional hands, you cannot pay them below N70,000,” the Senate President stated in a plenary speech. You cannot pay a housemaid less than the minimum wage that has been allowed if you are a mother hiring her to take care of your infant. This wage is not the maximum. It is applicable to everyone.

“You are not allowed to pay a driver or gateman less than N70,000 if you hire them. I am therefore really happy that this has been passed, and we now anticipate that labor employers will enhance what has been established as a standard that all will adhere to.

“I applaud the National Assembly, the Nigeria Labour Congress, and all Nigerians for this historic legislation, which even shortened the duration of the negotiations from five to three years in light of the rising cost of living. Once again, congrats on this historic law.
