On Wednesday, Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa, the Kano State Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party, denied knowledge of a letter from Senator Kawu Sumaila requesting an apology for alleged libellous allegations he made against the Senator.
“I have not received any letter, and no letter was addressed to me on the issue by anyone whatsoever,” Dungurawa told journalists in Kano on Wednesday.
He called the alleged letter a “rumour created by the enemy, supported by ignorance, and accepted by fools, and I am not a part of any of the above.”
He stated that the NNPP would not accept anti-party conduct by any member, including those in political office.
The chairman added that the NNPP has always promoted a level playing field for all members to accomplish their legitimate goals and thus expects complete allegiance from them.
In response to reports of a crisis inside the party’s state branch, Dungurawa emphasized that the NNPP remained “100 percent strong and united.”
He stated that the talk about the party’s problem is only a proof that the NNPP is a powerful, cohesive, and promising party with a competitive advantage.
Senator Kawu Sumaila (NNPP, Kano South) had threatened Dungurawa with legal action over a “libellous allegation” he reportedly made against him.
The threat was detailed in a letter to Dungurawa from Sunusi Musa (SAN), Managing Partner of Aliyu & Musa (SAN), Legal Practitioners and Consultants.
In a letter dated November 12, the solicitors stated: “We act as solicitors to Senator Suleiman Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila (“our client”), who is currently a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Kano South Senatorial District.” We are writing this letter based on his instructions.
“Our client’s attention was brought to a radio programme broadcast on Freedom Radio frequency 99.5 FM, which was also published on the radio station’s Facebook page and available globally. The speech tape has also been shared with a number of people and groups around the world via WhatsApp and Telegram.
“By this letter, we are demanding that you, on behalf of our client, retract the allegation within 24 hours of receipt of this letter in the same manner you made it,” the attorneys said.
They also requested that the NNPP chairman give the retraction the same level of attention as the interview, as well as a public apology to their client in two national newspapers.
“If you fail to meet our demands within the stipulated time, our client will be compelled to seek legal redress in a court of law,” the attorneys told you.
