On Monday, the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission refuted the announcement on the next local government elections that are set for Saturday, October 26, 2024.
The alleged message, which appeared on social media on Sunday, was attributed to OGSIEC Chairman Babatunde Osibodu and was dated Wednesday, July 24.
However, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, the governor’s special advisor on strategy and media, said our correspondent that the remark was false and that the people of the state should ignore it.
In response, Osibodu declared on Monday that the agency had never issued the statement.
A portion of the statement says, “The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) has learned of an unsigned document that is making the rounds on social media that claims to be a Notice of Election and schedule for the state’s 2024 Local Government Elections for chairmanship and councillorship positions.
The commission would like to notify the public and other pertinent parties that this information is untrue, did not come from OGSIEC, and should be ignored.
“The Commission will provide all relevant notices and information regarding the 2024 Local Government Elections in due course, duly signed by the Commission Chairman or other authorized signatories.”
On July 24, 2021, the current state elected local government officials were sworn in on July 26, 2021, and on Friday, July 26, they will conclude their three-year term.
The custom of state governors designating a caretaker committee to manage local government operations was prohibited by a recent ruling by the Supreme Court.
The highest court has similarly stressed that local governments have democratically elected governments and that they will not be eligible to receive the federal government’s monthly contribution if they do not.
