At least five individuals are believed to have died as a result of Monday’s gunfire at separate local government area secretariats in Rivers State.
Meanwhile, the police have not issued an official comment regarding the violence that has afflicted several LGAs throughout the state.
However, sources say that majority of the deaths are young people who are purportedly loyal to the state governor, Siminialayi Fubara.
The continuing firing at the council buildings has caused terror in the nearby community.
According to reports, by Monday afternoon, about five people had been killed in four local government districts, and three councils – Eleme, Emohua, and Ikwerre – had been set on fire.
The violence apparently erupted as newly elected local government chairmen, who were sworn in by the governor on Sunday, came at their respective council secretariats.
They came upon a group of youngsters who were hostile to their election and claimed to be there to clean the premises for the former council chairmen, whose terms had just expired.
The situation developed into shootings, resulting in several gunshot wounds and the alleged deaths of five people: one in Khana, three in Oyibo, and one in Ahoada-East.
Authorities have neglected to respond to the incidents, leaving citizens and local leaders concerned amid the violence.
Tinubu orders the IGP to restore peace.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has asked Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police, to restore security and maintain law and order in Rivers State’s local government secretariats.
Tinubu issued the directive in a statement released on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, his special assistant on communications and strategy.
