On August 21, 2024, aviation workers across will stage a demonstration to voice their opposition to the Federal Government’s ongoing deduction of fifty percent from the domestically generated revenue of important aviation agencies.
In a letter headed “Save Aviation From Collapse,” dated August 14, 2024, and distributed to press on Thursday, the unions made their announcement.
The Nigerian Federal Airports Authority, Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, and Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau are among the organizations that are impacted.
The letter stated, “All workers of the NCAA, FAAN, NAMA, NiMet, NCAT and NSIB, joined by the solidarity of all aviation workers are hereby directed to embark on peaceful protests at all airports nationwide on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, to demand the discontinuation of deduction of 50% from the internally generated revenue of the agencies mentioned above through exemption.
According to information at our disposal, the deductions are causing a number of the Agencies’ significant and vital safety-related operations to come to a complete stop. Therefore, it is now our duty as aviation workers’ unions and the government to inform the public and authorities that we will not be held accountable should the industry become dysfunctional as a result of financial incapacity brought on by the deductions at source, they continued.
The unions have instructed all state councils, women’s commissions, youth councils, and union branches across the country to properly mobilize and guarantee broad participation in advance of the protest.
